A Conversation On Yoga Therapy for Osteoporosis

About 54 million Americans are living with osteoporosis or low bone mass, and most don’t know it until a fracture happens. The condition progresses silently. No pain, no warning signs, just bones that are quietly becoming more fragile with every passing year.

In this Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy and Meditation podcast episode, Brandt Passalacqua, founder of Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapy, speaks with Marta Shedletsky, C-IAYT, a Breathing Deeply Yoga Therapist specializing in bone health, about how yoga therapy offers a more specific way to work with this condition.

They discuss why general yoga classes often fall short for individuals with bone loss, how a more individualized approach can better support the body, and how evidence-based yoga therapy practices can actually reverse osteoporosis, and what it looks like to rebuild bone strength at any age.

Beyond the physical side, yoga therapy also addresses the experience of living with osteoporosis—the hesitation around movement, and the uncertainty that can come with a condition that isn’t always visible.

At its core, yoga therapy is not about applying a general set of exercises, but about understanding what the individual needs and working from there to help them regain a sense of agency over their well-being. Something we continue to see firsthand here at Breathing Deeply.

If you’re navigating osteoporosis—or working with people who are—this perspective may be helpful. If you are seeking a yoga therapist, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to help.

May all beings be free from suffering,

Anna Passalacqua, co-founder and director at Breathing Deeply
